Portrane Hockey Club
It was a great honour for our Club Development Officer Adrian Henchy to formally present the McCann Cup to both Portrane Hockey Club and the Leinster Hockey Association. As a club we are immensely proud of our standing within Leinster hockey in this our Centenary year and the previous cups we have established notably The Neville Cup, Eugene Mulligan Cup and the Tommy O Sullivan Cup. Today was a very special day for the McCann family and the Neville family, both of whom are wonderful examples of what are the very best qualities and characteristics of Portrane, Leinster and Irish hockey. The Mc Canns have a long association with Portrane Hockey Club going back to the 1960s when Gerry (GK)and Pat played into the 1970s and later - also Christopher (GK) the 1980s and 1990s. They were later followed by Mark and Matthew sons of Pat and Lou. Lou a daughter of the late John Neville a class player and a niece to the legends Paddy and Dick Neville a hockey dynasty whom the Neville Cup is a major competition for the Leinster Hockey Association and is played for every St. Stephens Day on the 26th of December . Lou’s brothers Pat , James & Sean also represented the club with great distinction for a long number of seasons and towards the end of their playing careers both James Neville and Pat McCann began coaching hockey in Portrane which resulted in so many young girls and boys taking up hockey as a sport and this led to the great success of the Under 16 boys winning Leinster league & Cup in 1987. All of these young boys were born and raised in Portrane and at the heart of this team were two incredibly talented players Mark & Matthew McCann who went on to represent both Leinster & Ireland at Underage level. It is wonderful today to see both Matthew and Mark continue their love for Portrane Hockey Club where Mark through his company Oliver Marketing has been our main sponsor over many years and Matthew is a top class coach within our Underage structure. Today's presentation of the McCann Cup marked the start of Portrane Hockey Clubs Centenary Celebrations and it was great to have Paschal Henchy as Club Chairman present the "McCann Cup" to Pat both of whom have played, captained coached, managed and been officers of the Portrane Hockey Club for over 50 years. On behalf of Portrane Hockey Club sincere thanks to Pat, Lou, Sandra, Mark, Matthew the grandchildren and all the McCann Family, we are forever grateful and we look forward next Sunday the 27th of January to presenting the "McCann Cup" for the very first time to the winning Captain & club of the Leinster Under 14 Girls Indoor competition.
